Belgian Waffle Ride (BWR) Utah: 6-week KICK START training plan (Zwift compatible)

If you’re an intermediate cyclist targeting Belgian Waffle Ride Utah and coming out of winter ready to build with intent, this 6-week KICK START training plan is designed to prepare you for one of the toughest and most physically demanding events in the BWR series. Set in southern Utah, around the high desert and mountain terrain near Cedar City, BWR Utah combines altitude, sustained climbing, rough dirt sectors, and relentless changes in rhythm. This plan is about turning winter fitness into durable, race-ready performance.

Who’s it for?
This plan is aimed at intermediate cyclists with a solid aerobic base who are ready to move into a more purposeful build toward BWR Utah. Whether you’ve trained consistently through winter or are sharpening your focus as race day approaches, this block provides structure and intent at exactly the right point in the season. It’s shaped by real race experience and a clear understanding of what makes the Utah edition of BWR uniquely demanding.

Is it for you?
This plan assumes you’re comfortable riding both indoors and outdoors, with all key sessions fully Zwift-compatible for precision and consistency. It’s ideal if you want to transition smoothly from winter training into event-specific preparation without burning out, while rebuilding aerobic fitness, climbing durability, and repeatability.

The focus reflects the realities of BWR Utah: a fast, competitive start, followed by long periods of sustained effort at altitude, repeated climbs, and extended dirt and gravel sectors that gradually wear you down. The terrain is less chaotic than some BWR courses, but far more punishing over time, rewarding riders who can pace well, fuel consistently, and keep producing power as fatigue accumulates.

What’s involved?
The plan builds progressively over six weeks, carefully balancing structure with flexibility to support consistent progression. Each week targets key training zones using Zwift-based indoor sessions for accuracy and control, alongside outdoor rides to develop endurance, fatigue resistance, and real-world gravel skills.

There’s a strong emphasis on aerobic conditioning, sustained tempo and threshold work, and long climbing-focused efforts to reflect the Utah course profile. Longer rides focus on maintaining steady power deep into fatigue, practising fuelling under load, and staying composed on rough, high-altitude dirt roads where efficiency and patience matter more than explosive power.

The aim of this 6-week KICK START block isn’t to peak prematurely, but to leave you fitter, tougher, and more confident, ready to move into the final, BWR-specific preparation phase. You’ll be well prepared for altitude, sustained climbs, long gravel sectors, and the cumulative fatigue that define Belgian Waffle Ride Utah.
