If you’re an intermediate cyclist targeting Belgian Waffle Ride California and coming out of winter ready to build with intent, this 6-week KICK START training plan is designed to prepare you for one of the original and most iconic mixed-surface races in the world. Set in Southern California, BWR CA is defined by a fast and chaotic start, relentless changes in pace, punchy climbs, rough dirt sectors, and long stretches of riding where efficiency, handling, and restraint are critical. This plan is about converting winter fitness into race-ready performance for a truly demanding course.

The course around San Diego mixes paved roads, fire roads, rocky trails, and loose gravel, demanding both physical resilience and confident bike handling.

What’s involved?
The plan builds progressively over six weeks, carefully balancing structure with flexibility to support consistent progression. Each week targets key training zones using Zwift-based indoor sessions for accuracy and control, alongside outdoor rides to develop endurance, fatigue resistance, and mixed-surface skills.

There’s a strong emphasis on aerobic conditioning combined with repeated threshold, over-under, and VO₂-style efforts to mirror the surging nature of the race.
