If you’re an intermediate cyclist targeting Belgian Waffle Ride Arizona and coming out of winter ready to build with intent, this 6-week KICK START training plan is designed to sharpen you for one of the most demanding and unpredictable mixed-surface races in North America. Set in the desert terrain of Arizona, BWR is defined by a fast, aggressive start, repeated surges, punchy climbs, technical dirt sectors, and long stretches where efficiency and decision-making matter just as much as raw power. This plan is about turning winter fitness into race-ready capability.

Success at BWR depends on your ability to handle repeated high-power efforts, recover efficiently, stay composed on rough surfaces, and maintain output as fatigue accumulates across long miles in exposed desert conditions.

What’s involved?
The plan builds progressively over six weeks, carefully balancing structure with flexibility to support consistent progression. Each week targets key training zones using Zwift-based indoor sessions for precision and control, alongside outdoor rides to develop endurance, fatigue resistance, and real-world mixed-surface skills.

There’s a strong emphasis on aerobic conditioning combined with repeated threshold, over-under, and VO₂-style efforts to mirror the surging nature of the race. Longer rides focus on holding form and power late into fatigue, practising fuelling under load, and maintaining efficiency across variable terrain where traction, pacing, and restraint are critical.

The goal of this 6-week KICK START block isn’t to peak prematurely. Instead, it’s to leave you fitter, tougher, and more confident, perfectly positioned to move into the final, BWR-specific preparation phase.
