Winding Roads Durability Assessment Series + Performance Hub


Self-coached but not alone, questions welcome throughout the plan.


"It's easy to be fast in the first hour. This series teaches you to be fast in the fourth."

Many riders have a great 20-minute power but crumble when the day is hard. You might feel invincible at 9am, but empty by 1pm. That is a lack of Durability.

Drawing on my background with SRM and elite racing, I know races aren't won by the highest "Fresh FTP." They are won by the rider who can still produce power when tired.

This 10-week series targets "The Fade" by focusing on metabolic efficiency and muscular resilience.

SERIES OVERVIEW

Weeks 1-2: The Baseline

We start with the full Winding Roads Physiological Assessment protocol to establish a benchmark for Sprint, VO2max, and Threshold when fresh.


Weeks 3-8: The Build

A progressive block of Durability training. We focus on Metabolic Control and Muscular Endurance. You will tackle high-torque efforts to strengthen fatigue-resistant fibers, and long rides with "stings in the tail"—maximal efforts at the very end to simulate race demands.


Week 9-10: The Proof

We re-test. We look for a smaller gap between your "Fresh" power and your "Fatigued" power—proof that your engine is more robust.


WHO IS THIS FOR?

Road Racers: If you struggle more than your numbers suggest.

Gravel Riders: If you get dropped late in the race.

Fondo Riders: For events like the Etape where the hardest climbs are at the end.

Data-Curious: To see exactly how "durable" your fitness is.


Note: This plan is demanding and requires a base level of fitness.


Requirements:

• Power meter and heart-rate monitor (Essential).

• Willingness to commit to long Sunday rides (4+ hours).
