Plan Description

6-Week Heat 🔥 Adaptation & Performance Enhancement Plan

Prepare for hot-weather racing and unlock additional performance gains with this proven 6-week heat training protocol.

This plan has been successfully used by both myself and the athletes I coach to prepare for challenging events in warmer climates. Beyond improving heat tolerance, heat training can also enhance endurance performance through a range of physiological adaptations.

Whether you're targeting a Gran Fondo, sportive, stage race, training camp, or an event in a hotter climate than you're accustomed to, this plan provides a structured and progressive approach to heat adaptation.

Who Is This Plan For?

This plan is designed for experienced cyclists with an established training background and a good level of fitness.

Ideal for riders preparing for events such as:
Marmotte Gran Fondo
Mallorca 312
Mallorca Masters Stage Race
Multi-day cycling events
Long-distance sportives and Gran Fondos
Hot-weather endurance races

This is not a beginner's plan. It is intended for athletes looking for an additional performance advantage ahead of an important event.

What Are The Benefits?

Heat adaptation can help deliver:
Improved tolerance to hot racing conditions
Increased plasma volume
Reduced cardiovascular strain
Improved sweating efficiency and cooling capacity
Enhanced endurance performance
Greater confidence when racing in challenging environments

Important Considerations

Consistency is critical. Heat adaptation is an accumulative process, so completing the majority of sessions is essential to maximise the benefits.

Expect a temporary drop in performance. During the first 1–3 weeks, training may feel harder and power output may be lower than normal. This is a normal part of the adaptation process.

Avoid key races during the initial phase. The first three weeks prioritise heat exposure and adaptation. If you have important races scheduled, consider postponing this programme until you can fully commit to the process.

Health comes first. Heat stress is a significant physiological challenge. Stop immediately if you experience symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, confusion, or cessation of sweating. Hydration before, during, and after every session is essential.

If you have any underlying medical conditions, particularly cardiovascular concerns, consult your physician before beginning this programme.

The Science Behind The Plan

The first phase of the programme is designed to stimulate key heat adaptations, including:
Plasma volume expansion
Improved sweat response
Reduced heart rate at a given workload
Improved thermoregulation
Enhanced cardiovascular efficiency

The plan follows a proven progression:

Weeks 1-3: Heat Adaptation Phase

Higher emphasis on heat exposure with endurance-focused training and lower overall intensity.

Weeks 4-6: Performance Phase

Reduced artificial heat stress combined with threshold and VO2 max work to allow fitness gains to be expressed.

How To Implement The Heat Training

Indoor Training: Complete sessions indoors with no fan, additional clothing layers, and a room temperature of approximately 28-32°C (82-90°F). The goal is controlled heat stress, not extreme overheating.

Outdoor Training: If you live in a warmer climate, perform sessions during the warmer part of the day.

Sauna or Hot Bath: A 20-30 minute sauna or hot bath immediately after training can provide an effective passive heat stimulus.

6-Week Overview

Week 1 – Heat Acclimation Introduction
Week 2 – Heat Base Building
Week 3 – Peak Heat Load

Tried and Tested Cycle Coaching

Hi, my name is Colin from Tried and Tested Cycle Coaching. I've been cycling for 15+ years and my primary focus has been on the road, both in terms of road racing and time trials with a high degree of success. I've learnt a lot in those years from reading and studying the science and from listening to others, that journey never stops. I still enjoy racing at a high level in the amateur ranks as a master and I'm now looking to pass on that knowledge and help others achieve their goals.
