The Endurance Phase for Cyclists focuses on developing the muscular endurance and aerobic capacity needed for sustained efforts over long distances. This phase emphasizes high-repetition, lower-resistance strength training and prolonged aerobic conditioning to improve fatigue resistance, pedaling efficiency, and overall stamina.
Key Characteristics for Cyclists:
1. Focus:
• Build muscular endurance to sustain repeated contractions over extended periods.
• Enhance aerobic efficiency and the ability to clear lactate during long rides.
• Maintain strength and stability while shifting emphasis to endurance.
2. Intensity & Volume:
• Moderate resistance with high repetitions (12–20 reps per set).
• Increased training volume and shorter rest periods (30–60 seconds).
• Emphasis on submaximal efforts both on and off the bike.
3. Cycling-Specific Adaptations:
• Improved fatigue resistance in quads, hamstrings, and glutes.
• Enhanced cardiovascular and muscular efficiency for steady-state efforts.
4. Energy Systems Development:
• Aerobic base-building with long, steady-state rides.
• Threshold work to improve sustained power output (FTP).
