What does this plan do?
After following this plan, you should see an improvement in your threshold power (e.g. FTP). This means you'll be able to hold higher power over durations of around 20-60 minutes, and recover better after hard efforts. You may find that your endurance and VO2max are also improved.
This is achieved by targeting improvements in your fat oxidation ability and ability to shuttle and clear lactate. We also spend some time working on your mental and physical tolerance to riding close to your threshold power.
Who is this plan for?
Threshold power is relevant to all endurance cycling disciplines, and is something most endurance cyclists should work on at some point in their training.
The plan includes regular opportunities for skills development, meaning this plan can be used for any discipline.
As this plan follows a polarised intensity distribution, with training intensities that are tailored to your fitness level, this plan is suitable for athletes of a range of abilities, including masters athletes, provided you have completed at least 2 months of training with a volume of around 9-12H/week in the recent past.
Note athletes who have a 5-min max power that's similar to their 20-min max power and who struggle to respond to pace changes in races/group rides may have more success in lifting their threshold power by following one of our VO2max plans.
