Viana's three moderate climbs punish the rider who mistakes 127 to 130 kilometers for an easy day
The current 2027 organizer profile shows a rolling Alto Minho loop from Viana do Castelo with three categorized climbs spread across the middle and final third: Pedras Finas (9.5km at 3.2%), Sapardos (2.5km at 5.5%), and 7 Caminhos (5.5km at 3.2%). The route graphic labels 127km, while the regulation advertises 130km. Pedras Finas (9.5km at 3.2%) is the longest sustained climb; Sapardos follows with the day's steepest published average at 5.5%.
For the experienced rider training seven to eleven hours a week, this twelve-week plan balances durable rolling-road power, efficient group speed, controlled climbing, fueling, and open-road composure with deliberate recovery so fitness rises without carrying avoidable fatigue into Viana Granfondo.

Hey, I'm Matti. I spent 11 years at TrainingPeaks, where they trusted me to teach coaches how to coach at TrainingPeaks University. I raced Amateur Elite with Rio Grande Cycling Team and podiumed my age group at Unbound 200 in 2026. I have a degree in biology and exercise physiology from St. Olaf. I'm also a middle-aged dad of three, so I know training doesn't happen in a vacuum. I help gravel riders get stupidly fast without becoming the person who brings a food scale to a party
