Umbrail is not the finale; Livigno still saves Foscagno, Eira, and Mottolino for the return
An all-asphalt loop leaving Aquagranda in Livigno (already at 1,816 m), crossing the town and climbing the Forcola di Livigno into Switzerland to reach Passo Bernina. The route continues through the Upper Engadin to Zernez, crosses Pass dal Fuorn and the Umbrail Pass, then descends toward the Bormio/Valdidentro side of the Rhaetian Alps. The Eira-Mottolino finale (1.9 km at roughly 9.3%) to the 2,385 m Mottolino gondola station — the same finish where Tadej Pogačar soloed the 2024 Giro d'Italia queen stage, now the granfondo's dedicated closing test.
For the rider aiming to complete Granfondo Livigno Alè strongly on seven to eleven hours a week, this twelve-week plan builds repeatable high-altitude climbing, descending confidence, fueling, temperature management, and timed-sector execution for Umbrail Pass after 100 kilometers and the Eira-Mottolino finish above 2,300 meters.
INSIDE THE FINISHER PLAN — 7–11 HR/WK
Includes zone-tailored structured rides for your devices, built-in strength with video walkthroughs, heat protocols for when your race calls for them, peloton skills workouts, and nutrition and hydration guidance.
The Complete Granfondo Livigno Alè Guide — the training, the tactics, the gear and race day, explained simply and clearly: what to do, when to do it, and why it works.

Hey, I'm Matti. I spent 11 years at TrainingPeaks, where they trusted me to teach coaches how to coach at TrainingPeaks University. I raced Amateur Elite with Rio Grande Cycling Team and podiumed my age group at Unbound 200 in 2026. I have a degree in biology and exercise physiology from St. Olaf. I'm also a middle-aged dad of three, so I know training doesn't happen in a vacuum. I help gravel riders get stupidly fast without becoming the person who brings a food scale to a party
