Plan Description
112 miles through the Lake District's most savage passes. 3,900 metres of climbing. Hardknott at 33% on mile 96. Britain's hardest sportive since 1999, named after a fallen cyclist and run entirely for charity.
The 180.2-kilometer Grasmere loop links the Lake District's major paved passes in sequence: Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Cold Fell, Hardknott, Wrynose, and Blea Tarn. Rough single-track tarmac, extreme gradients, open roads, technical descents, and roughly 3,900 meters of climbing make this an accumulation event long before the famous final passes arrive. Hardknott Pass begins around mile 96 after most of the route's distance and climbing are already in the legs.
For the rider aiming to complete Fred Whitton Challenge strongly on seven to eleven hours a week, this twelve-week plan builds sustained climbing, repeatable climbing power, descending confidence, and fatigue resistance for Hardknott, Wrynose, and Blea Tarn after mile 96.
INSIDE THE FINISHER PLAN — 7–11 HR/WK
