A domestique's home roads
Gran Fondo Hincapie's 2026 Gran route packs 8,040 feet of climbing into about 85 miles, with three timed climbs and a speed zone through the Blue Ridge foothills. The Skyuka descent is steep enough that carbon-clincher rim-brake wheels are prohibited, and the organizer warns that a few short sections are unpaved — sustained climbing and descent control define this course.
For the rider bringing eight focused weeks and four to six hours a week, this plan combines sustained climbing work efficiently, with the weekly longer ride building the legs an 85-mile mountain route demands.

Hey, I'm Matti. I spent 11 years at TrainingPeaks, where they trusted me to teach coaches how to coach at TrainingPeaks University. I raced Amateur Elite with Rio Grande Cycling Team and podiumed my age group at Unbound 200 in 2026. I have a degree in biology and exercise physiology from St. Olaf. I'm also a middle-aged dad of three, so I know training doesn't happen in a vacuum. I help gravel riders get stupidly fast without becoming the person who brings a food scale to a party
