Plan Description
Let’s be honest. Raising your FTP is not about randomly smashing yourself every time you get on the bike.
This 8-week cycling plan is built for riders who already ride regularly and want clear structure to improve sustainable power, threshold strength and the ability to ride harder for longer.
The plan uses a progressive mix of endurance riding, sweet spot work, threshold efforts, under-overs, recovery, and a final assessment week. The goal is not just to chase one big number, but to build better control, repeatability, and confidence around harder efforts.
You will start with calibration and controlled pressure, then move through sweet spot foundation, threshold development, a consolidation week, sustained power work, repeatability near threshold, peak workload, and a final freshen-and-assess week.
This plan is best for cyclists who can already train consistently, usually around three to five times per week, and want to stop guessing. It may suit riders preparing for sportives, Gran Fondos, harder club rides, time trials, or general performance improvement.
It is not designed for complete beginners, and it is not a substitute for individual coaching.
If you need personalised feedback, data review, regular adjustments, or support around fatigue, illness, racing, shift work, or complex goals, full coaching or a custom training block may be a better fit.
This plan is written by Robert Ferguson of Watts Ahead, a UCI Level 3 Diploma Coach, UCI / UNIL CAS Coach, and British Cycling Level 3 Coach. My approach is practical, structured, and honest: clear training, controlled progression, and no nonsense promises.
