8-WEEK ZONE 2 BASE BUILDER
An 8-week Zone 2 cycling training plan for riders with 7 to 10 hours a week, built for a power meter or a heart rate monitor. It builds the engine every other number sits on and measures it with an aerobic efficiency test in Week 1 and Week 8. Sprints, bursts and low-cadence blocks sit inside the easy hours so base never feels like homework.
WHY BASE IS THE NUMBER UNDER EVERY OTHER NUMBER
Base is why your heart rate drifts up on a long ride while your power stays flat, why the last climb feels twice as hard as the first, and why your FTP holds for 20 minutes but not 60. You cannot see it on one ride. You can see it on the same ride, eight weeks apart. This plan gives you that comparison.

WHAT SITS INSIDE A ZONE 2 RIDE
• Sprints - 8 sec, all-out, full recovery. Nervous system stays fast while the engine builds slow.
• Bursts - 10 sec every 5 min inside long rides, straight back to Zone 2.
• Low-cadence blocks - 55 rpm, big gear, Zone 2 power. Heavy legs, easy lungs.
• Tempo - only in the last hour of long rides, when you are already tired. That is where durability is built.

THE 8 WEEKS
• Week 1 - Zone test Tuesday, efficiency test Saturday. 7h30
• Weeks 2-3 - Build I. Long ride to 3h. 8h30-9h30
• Week 4 - Recovery. The week most cyclists skip and shouldn't. 6h30
• Weeks 5-6 - Build II. Long rides to 4h. 9h30-10h
• Week 7 - Taper with a comparison ride. 7h30
• Week 8 - Retest, same conditions. 6h
WHO IT'S FOR
• Riders whose heart rate drifts on long rides while power stays flat
• Anyone back from a break, an injury or a winter off the bike
• Riders who found "just ride Zone 2" too vague to finish
WHO IT ISN'T FOR
• Riders four weeks from a target race - the FTP or VO2max plan gets you there faster
QUESTIONS
Can I do this plan without a power meter? Yes. Every session carries heart rate and feel targets. You test with a 30 min time trial instead of a 20 min FTP test.
Can I ride it indoors? Yes. Sprints and bursts need resistance mode, not ERG. Everything else works either way.
What is the aerobic efficiency test? 45 min at 65% FTP. Less heart rate drift in Week 8 at the same power means a bigger engine.
Which plan first - Base, FTP or VO2max? Base if your heart rate drifts. FTP if it holds but your 20 min power is low. VO2max if FTP is above 80% of your 5 min power.
