8-Week “What You Need” Plan for Masters Athletes
This 8-week plan is built around a simple truth for masters athletes: you don’t need more — you need the right work, done well, with proper recovery.
Instead of chasing volume, this plan focuses on the sessions that actually move the needle — while respecting how masters athletes recover and adapt.
What You Need:
1. One High-Intensity Ride (VO₂ / Anaerobic Focus)
Short, targeted efforts to maintain top-end power, aerobic ceiling, and responsiveness. This keeps you sharp without excessive fatigue.
2. One Threshold Ride
Sustained work near FTP to build strength, durability, and the ability to hold strong power under pressure. This is your engine-building session.
3. One Long Ride
Steady aerobic endurance to develop stamina, metabolic efficiency, and late-race resilience.
4. Bone-Loading Strength Training (1–2x per week)
Cycling is non-impact and does little for bone density. Masters athletes need intentional loading to maintain strength and skeletal health. This plan includes focused strength sessions using heavy resistance and/or controlled impact to stimulate bone, preserve lean muscle, and support long-term durability.
Everything is spaced with intentional recovery between key sessions. As a masters athlete, adaptation happens during rest — not from stacking hard days.
The result?
You build power, durability, and long-term resilience — without digging a hole you can’t climb out of.
