4-week Haute Route KICK START training plan (Zwift compatible)

If you’re taking on the Haute Route, this 4-week training plan is designed to help cyclists of all abilities train with purpose, build confidence, and lay strong foundations for the demands of one of the world’s most iconic multi-day cycling events. It’s an ideal short KICK START block to create momentum, sharpen fitness, and prepare your body for sustained climbing and long days in the mountains.

Who’s it for?
This plan is suitable for cyclists of all abilities preparing for the Haute Route, from those tackling their first major alpine challenge to more experienced riders looking for structure and direction. Whether you’re coming off a busy period, restarting after a short break, or simply want a focused block to steady your training, our KICK START plan helps establish consistency and good habits early on. It’s shaped by real-world coaching experience and an understanding of what the Haute Route demands physically and mentally.

Is it for you?
The plan assumes you’re comfortable riding indoors (e.g. Zwift) and outdoors, and happy combining structured sessions with longer endurance rides. It’s ideal if you want to train consistently without overreaching, improve aerobic fitness, and begin developing the durability and pacing skills required for long alpine climbs and consecutive days of riding.

What’s involved?
Over 4 weeks, the plan progresses steadily, balancing structure with flexibility. Each week works across key training zones, using indoor sessions for control and efficiency alongside outdoor rides to build endurance and real-world riding skills. There’s a strong focus on aerobic conditioning, sustained tempo and sweet-spot work, climbing efficiency, and fatigue resistance, all essential for managing long ascents, extended time at altitude, and repeated days in the saddle.

The aim isn’t to peak in these four weeks, but to emerge fitter, more confident, and better prepared to move into more Haute Route–specific training. You’ll be setting yourself up to handle the physical demands of the climbs, the pacing challenges of long stages, and the consistency required to ride well day after day in the mountains.
