Return to Training: 6-week beginner cycling plan for Masters Cyclists

Ease yourself back into structured cycling with a plan designed specifically for Masters athletes (40+), where smart progression, consistency, and recovery are key. This 6-week Return to Training plan helps you rebuild confidence and fitness in a controlled, sustainable way, without unnecessary stress on the body.

Who’s it for?
This plan is ideal for Masters cyclists (40+) returning to structured training after a break, whether due to injury, illness, work or family commitments, or simply time away from organised training. It’s also well suited to riders who have been riding casually or spinning regularly but want more structure and purpose in their training.

The emphasis is on re-establishing routine, rhythm, and resilience, rather than chasing intensity or numbers.

Is it for you?
The plan assumes a basic level of cycling fitness, access to a turbo trainer, and an active Zwift account. You should be comfortable riding for around 45–50 minutes. Training is scheduled at 3–4 sessions per week, keeping sessions achievable and easy to fit around work, family, and recovery needs, all particularly important for Masters athletes.

It’s ideal if you want to train consistently, feel productive, and build momentum while minimising injury risk and avoiding burnout.

What’s involved?
Over the 6 weeks, the plan progresses gradually and sensibly, respecting the recovery needs of Masters cyclists. Each week includes a balanced mix of easy aerobic riding, controlled moderate efforts, and brief, well-timed touches of higher intensity to reintroduce the full range of training zones without overload.

Session duration remains manageable throughout, while structure and confidence steadily increase. Recovery is prioritised, allowing adaptations to take hold and supporting long-term consistency.

The goal isn’t to peak or push limits, but to leave you feeling fitter, more confident, and well prepared to move into longer or more demanding training plans with a solid, healthy foundation in place.
