6-Week Century/Gran Fondo Training Plan for Masters Cyclists

If you’re a Masters cyclist (40+) looking to train with more purpose, this 6-week Kick-Start plan is designed to rebuild consistency, lift fitness, and prepare you for the demands of a Century or Gran Fondo in a sustainable, intelligent way. It provides a structured bridge between general riding and more event-specific training, helping you progress without unnecessary fatigue and with recovery firmly in mind.

Who’s it for?
This plan is aimed at Masters cyclists who already ride regularly and have a reasonable base of fitness, but want clearer structure and direction in their training. If you’ve been riding consistently but feel you could benefit from more purposeful sessions, or you’re planning a longer-distance event and want to prepare sensibly, this plan offers an effective and realistic approach.
It’s particularly well suited to riders who value longevity, consistency, and quality over volume or intensity for intensity’s sake.

Is it for you?
This plan assumes you’re comfortable riding for 90 minutes or more and are happy training both indoors (such as Zwift) and outdoors. Sessions are designed to balance structured quality with steady endurance riding, allowing you to improve fitness while managing fatigue and recovery, key considerations for Masters athletes.

It’s ideal if you want to train more consistently, develop all-round fitness, and build endurance without overreaching. The emphasis is on controlled progression, good pacing, and repeatable efforts rather than chasing numbers.

What’s involved?
The plan progresses sensibly over 6 weeks, carefully balancing structure with flexibility to support adaptation and recovery. Each week includes a mix of aerobic endurance rides, controlled moderate-intensity work, and longer steady sessions to build durability and confidence over distance.

Key focuses include improving aerobic efficiency, reinforcing pacing discipline, maintaining strength through controlled intensity, developing fatigue resistance, and practising fuelling and recovery strategies that support long-term performance. Indoor sessions provide precision and control, while outdoor rides reinforce real-world skills and efficiency.

The goal isn’t to peak during these six weeks. Instead, this block is designed to leave you fitter, more robust, and well prepared to move into a more specific training phase for your chosen Century or Gran Fondo, with confidence in both your fitness and your approach.
