6-Week Spring Gran Fondo Strade Bianche Training Plan (Zwift compatible)
If you’re an intermediate cyclist coming out of winter and targeting the Gran Fondo Strade Bianche, this 6-week spring plan is designed to rebuild momentum, raise fitness, and develop the specific qualities required for this uniquely demanding event. It’s the ideal transition from winter consistency into focused preparation for a sportive defined by rolling Tuscan terrain, repeated surges, and the physical and technical demands of gravel sectors.
Who’s it for?
This training plan is aimed at intermediate cyclists with a solid winter base who are ready to begin a more purposeful build toward Strade Bianche. Whether you’ve trained steadily through winter or are sharpening things up as spring approaches, the plan provides structure and direction at exactly the right point in the season. It helps convert general winter fitness into the strength, resilience, and confidence needed to handle constant changes in pace, surface, and terrain.
Is it for you?
This plan assumes you’re comfortable riding both indoors (such as Zwift) and outdoors as conditions improve, and happy combining structured quality sessions with longer endurance rides. It’s ideal if you want to transition smoothly into spring training without burning out, while developing the key qualities required for Strade Bianche: strong aerobic capacity, repeatable hard efforts, muscular endurance, bike-handling confidence, and the ability to stay composed as fatigue builds.
You’ll be building the foundations needed for the famous white gravel sectors, where rolling climbs, short punchy efforts, limited recovery, and rough surfaces reward efficiency, durability, and smart pacing.
What’s involved?
The plan builds progressively over 6 weeks, balancing structure with flexibility to allow consistent improvement without excessive fatigue. Each week works across the key training zones, using indoor sessions for precision and control alongside outdoor rides to develop endurance, strength, and real-world robustness. There’s a strong emphasis on aerobic conditioning, sustained tempo, over-under efforts, strength endurance, and fatigue resistance, all crucial for handling repeated surges and long days over mixed terrain.
The goal isn’t to peak during these six weeks. Instead, you’ll come out of this spring block fitter, stronger, and more resilient, perfectly positioned to move into the final, more Gran Fondo Strade Bianche–specific phase of preparation feeling confident, motivated, and ready to train with real intent for race day.
