4-week Winter Dragon Ride training plan
If you’re an intermediate cyclist targeting the Dragon Ride, this 4-week winter training plan is designed to help you use the colder months wisely, keep fitness moving forward, and arrive in spring ready to build with confidence. It’s the ideal bridge between winter consistency and the demands of one of the UK’s most iconic sportive routes through South Wales.
Who’s it for?
This training plan is aimed at intermediate cyclists with a solid fitness base who want structure and direction through the winter. Whether you’ve come off a busy season, taken a short reset, or simply want a clear focus for next year, this plan helps you maintain momentum while laying the groundwork for Dragon Ride–specific training. We’ve coached many cyclists successfully through the Dragon Ride over the years, so this plan reflects the real demands of the event.
Is it for you?
This plan assumes you’re comfortable riding both indoors (e.g. Zwift) and outdoors, and happy mixing structured quality sessions with longer endurance rides. It’s ideal if you want to stay consistent without burning out, keep variety in your training, and gradually rebuild strength, aerobic fitness, and durability, all essential for tackling long days in the Brecon Beacons.
What’s involved?
The plan builds progressively over 4 weeks, balancing structure with flexibility. Each week you’ll work across the key training zones, combining indoor sessions for efficiency and control with outdoor rides to develop endurance, strength, and real-world riding skills. There’s an emphasis on sustained climbing strength, tempo and sweet-spot work, and fatigue resistance, all crucial for famous Dragon Ride climbs such as The Bwlch, Rhigos, Black Mountain, and Devil’s Elbow.
The goal isn’t to peak now; it’s to come out of winter fit, motivated, and well prepared to move into more Dragon Ride–specific training as spring approaches, ready to take on the Welsh hills with confidence.
