This plan is inspired by 1980s books by Bernard Hinault and Greg Lemond. While over 30 years old, the training principles embodied in these books are still sound today. Having followed similar plans during my racing days in the late 1980s, I continue to apply many of these "so-called" old school techniques with my current athletes.
"Back in the day" there was limited on-the-bike measurement equipment and intensity monitoring was restricted to RPE and heart rate. Power could be measured in the lab, but there was no way to take it out on the road.
The workouts herein can be executed well even without power meters and heart rate monitor.
