Cape Epic MTB: 6-week KICK START training plan

If you’re an intermediate mountain biker targeting the Absa Cape Epic and coming out of winter or early spring ready to step things up, this 6-week plan is designed to kick-start your training and guide you toward the specific demands of the world’s most iconic MTB stage race. It’s an ideal transition phase to rebuild rhythm, lift fitness, and begin developing the aerobic strength, durability, and resilience required for repeated long days of racing across the rugged terrain of South Africa’s Western Cape.

Who’s it for?
This training plan is aimed at intermediate MTB riders with a solid base of fitness who are ready to move into a more purposeful build toward the Cape Epic. Whether you’ve trained consistently through winter or are re-establishing structure as the season changes, this plan provides clear direction at exactly the right point in your preparation. It’s shaped by real race insight and an understanding of what the Cape Epic demands physically, mentally, and tactically over multiple consecutive days.

Is it for you?
This plan assumes you’re comfortable riding both indoors (such as Zwift) and outdoors, and happy blending structured quality sessions with longer endurance rides. It’s ideal if you want to transition smoothly from general winter training into more event-specific preparation without burning out, while rebuilding aerobic fitness, strength, and long-ride durability.
The focus reflects the realities of the Cape Epic: long hours in the saddle, repeated days of racing, sustained climbing, technical singletrack, rough jeep tracks, heat management, and the need to recover and go again day after day. Success at the Epic isn’t just about peak power, it’s about consistency, efficiency, pacing, and resilience across an entire week of racing.

What’s involved?
The plan builds progressively over six weeks, carefully balancing structure with flexibility to support consistent progression. Each week targets key training zones, using indoor sessions for precision and control alongside outdoor rides to develop endurance, fatigue resistance, and real-world MTB skills.

There’s a strong emphasis on aerobic conditioning, sustained tempo and sweet-spot work, low-cadence strength efforts, and maintaining power as fatigue accumulates, all crucial for handling the long climbs, varied terrain, and cumulative load of racing in the Western Cape. Sessions also reinforce pacing discipline and fuelling habits, both critical for multi-day stage racing.

The goal of this 6-week block isn’t to peak yet. Instead, it’s to come out fitter, tougher, and more consistent, perfectly positioned to move into the next, more Cape Epic–specific phase of preparation. You’ll be laying the foundations needed to handle back-to-back stages, technical terrain, and the physical and mental demands of one of the toughest endurance events in mountain biking.
