Train with your cycle, not against it. This eight week plan for female cyclists riding six to eight hours a week layers a flexible, cycle-aware overlay on a genuinely strong, funky training block, with every ride built for Zwift and any indoor smart trainer and every target in percent of FTP so it scales precisely to you. It is a proper training plan first, with a menstrual-cycle lens on top, never a watered-down one.
WHO IT IS FOR. Female cyclists who want to learn how their own body responds across the menstrual cycle while building real fitness. It suits riders with roughly six to eight hours a week who train mostly indoors. Please note the cycle structure is a personalisable template, not a rule: the science is still emerging and highly individual, this is general educational guidance and not medical advice, and if you have irregular cycles, use hormonal contraception, are pregnant, postpartum, peri or post-menopausal, you can adapt or simply ignore the phase overlay and follow it as a normal well-built plan. Consult a qualified coach or medical professional with any concerns.
HOW IT PROGRESSES. Eight weeks map over roughly two menstrual cycles. Follicular weeks carry the biggest quality and long rides, weeks around ovulation add strong aerobic and tempo, and luteal or premenstrual weeks ease back with steadier riding, more recovery flexibility and a fuelling and hydration emphasis. Week four is a recovery week. Day one is a 20 minute FTP test and the final day is a retest so you can measure your progress.
WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT. Every ride is a distinct, creative session, from over-unders and VO2 ladders to micro-burst stacks and undulating long rides. Each carries a six part description, a pre-ride cue and one link to a verified sports-science paper, including recent female-specific and menstrual-cycle research, presented in a balanced, non-prescriptive way. You are encouraged throughout to track your own responses and shift the template to your own cycle.
WHAT TO EXPECT EACH WEEK. Five rides most weeks, Monday rest, quality on Tuesday and Thursday, endurance midweek and a long ride on Saturday. Weekly notes tell you the nominal cycle phase, the key sessions and the fuelling focus, and remind you to personalise. Ride indoors, learn your patterns, and finish stronger and more self-aware than you started.
