4-week Winter L’Étape du Tour training plan (Zwift compatible)

If you’re an intermediate cyclist targeting L’Étape du Tour, this plan is designed to help you use the winter months wisely, maintain momentum, and arrive in spring ready to build with confidence. It’s the ideal bridge between winter consistency and the demands of the legendary Alpine climbs that define the Tour de France experience.

Who’s it for?
This training plan is aimed at intermediate cyclists with a solid fitness base who want structure and direction through the winter. Whether you’re coming off a busy season, have taken a short reset, or simply want a clear focus heading into next year, this plan helps you stay consistent while laying the groundwork for the long climbs and sustained efforts of L’Étape du Tour.

Is it for you?
This plan assumes you’re comfortable riding both indoors (e.g. Zwift) and outdoors, and happy combining structured quality sessions with longer endurance rides. It’s ideal if you want to keep variety in your training, avoid burnout, and gradually rebuild aerobic fitness, strength, and climbing durability, all essential for iconic ascents such as Alpe d’Huez, Col du Galibier, Col du Tourmalet, or Col de la Loze, depending on the year’s route.

What’s involved?
The plan builds progressively over 4 weeks, balancing structure with flexibility. Each week you’ll work across the key training zones, using indoor sessions for controlled intensity and efficiency, alongside outdoor rides to develop endurance, muscular strength, and real-world climbing skills. The focus is on aerobic conditioning, sustained tempo and sweet spot work, and fatigue resistance, the foundations needed for long Alpine climbs and high mountain days.

The goal isn’t to peak now; it’s to come out of winter fit, motivated, and well prepared to move into more L’Étape-specific training as spring approaches, ready to take on the mountains with confidence.
