Welcome to the “Road to Levi’s" training plan. As you prepare to tackle the Growler, this 12-week program is designed to take the guesswork out of your preparation so you can arrive in Sonoma County with one goal: to enjoy the ride.
Levi’s Gran Fondo is a test of mettle, featuring punchy climbs, technical descents, and breathtaking coastal winds. This plan isn't just about riding more; it’s about riding *smarter* to ensure that when you hit the bottom of King Ridge, you have the legs to conquer it.
The Training Philosophy: Base to Peak
This plan follows a classic periodization model to ensure you don’t burn out before the big day. We focus on two distinct phases:
1. Phase 1: Building the Engine (Weeks 1–6)
We start by establishing a rock-solid aerobic base. By focusing on "Time on Tension" and Zone 2 endurance, we improve your metabolic efficiency and muscular durability. A strong base is the foundation that allows you to handle the high-intensity work to come.
2. Phase 2: Sharpening the Sword (Weeks 7–12)
As the event nears, we transition into "sharpening." We introduce hill-specific intervals, threshold efforts, and pacing strategies designed to mimic the relentless rollers of the Sonoma coast. We finish with a dedicated taper so you arrive fresh, fast, and ready.
By the time you line up in Santa Rosa, your fitness won't be a question mark – it will be a statement. Let's get to work and put the hay in the barn!
