Pre-season Cyclocross 6-week training plan (CX)

If you’re an intermediate cyclocross rider ready to step things up, this 6-week plan is designed to kick-start focused training and prepare you for the specific demands of cyclocross racing. It’s an ideal transition phase to rebuild rhythm, lift overall fitness, and develop the aerobic strength, repeatability, and mental toughness required for hard, high-intensity efforts on technical, ever-changing terrain.

Who’s it for?
This training plan is aimed at intermediate cyclocross riders with a solid fitness base who want more structure and intent in their training. Whether you’ve been riding consistently or are refocusing ahead of the season, the plan provides clear direction and purpose at exactly the right moment. It’s shaped by real-world cyclocross demands, both physical and mental.

Is it for you?
This plan assumes you’re comfortable training both indoors (e.g. Zwift) and outdoors, and happy blending structured sessions with race-relevant riding. It’s ideal if you want to build fitness without burning out, while developing the ability to handle repeated hard efforts, short recoveries, and the stop–start nature of cyclocross racing.

The focus reflects the realities of cyclocross: repeated surges above threshold, short climbs, accelerations out of corners, running and remounting fatigue, variable traction, and the need to stay sharp under pressure.

What’s involved?
The plan builds progressively over 6 weeks, balancing structure with flexibility to support consistent improvement. Each week targets key performance qualities using controlled indoor sessions for precision alongside outdoor rides to develop durability, handling confidence, and race-specific fitness. There’s a strong emphasis on aerobic conditioning, threshold and VO₂ work, repeatability, and maintaining form and output as fatigue builds, all essential for sustained performance across a full cyclocross race.

The goal isn’t to peak during these six weeks. Instead, it’s to come out fitter, sharper, and more resilient, perfectly positioned to move into more race-specific training and perform confidently as the cyclocross season unfolds.
