It was an exciting start to the 2018 Tour de France that saw some unexpected outcomes for GC contenders, along with a few crashes. EF Education First p/b Cannondale’s Lawson Craddock had the first big crash of the day near a feeding station, while Team Sky’s Chris Froome crashed along with several others in the closing kilometers of the race, helping Colombian Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors) secure his first stage win in his Tour debut.

Dimension Data’s Jay Thomson tried to put his stamp early on this year’s Tour, leading the peloton alongside Robert Gesink (LottNL-Jumbo). Thomson was leading the race with 114km to go but was eventually overtaken during the first intermediate sprint of the Tour, which was eventually won by Jerome Cousin (Direct Energie). Thomson would eventually fall back and finish four minutes behind the main pack, but his enthusiasm and determination to go from the gun were a sight to see!
