Tour de France 2018

Stage 8 Overview

Dreux to Amiens Métropole

Saturday, July 14, 2018

Stage Summary

In stage 8 the spotlight will again be on sprinters. The course runs 181 km north from Dreux towards the northern coast in Amiens. An intermediate sprint at km 86.5 could keep things interesting, but don’t get too attached to the break, as coastal winds could once again be a factor toward the finish.

Ultimately it was Dylan Groenewegen of Lotto-Jumbo who won the day, with Peter Sagan of Bora Hansgrohe finishing second. Dan Martin suffered a nasty crash with under 20k to go, but appears to be able to continue. Any riders suffering bumps and bruises will no doubt be worried about tomorrow’s heavily cobbled stage.

Stage Analysis From Best Bike Split

While the wind can be quite strong and variable here it is most likely another day for the sprinters before heading to the cobbles in stage 9. The final 2 km to the finish has two sharp left hand turns, the last being just 600 meters from the finish line. Teams who can keep a couple of leadout riders with big acceleration power at the front are in good position to take the sprint.
