Tour de France 2018

Stage 2 Overview

Mouilleron-Saint-Germain to La Roche-sur-Yon

Sunday, July 8, 2018

Stage Summary

Stage 2 is just over 185 kilometers long, covering a rough semi-circle between the cities of Mouilleron-Saint-Germain and La Roche-sur-Yon. Some category 4 climbing starts out the day, before a mostly flat remainder with an intermediate sprint at km 132.

A crash with less than two kilometers to go took out yesterday’s winner, Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors), and allowed Team Bora-Hansgrohe to take advantage of their positioning and help pull world champion Peter Sagan across the line.

Stage Analysis From Best Bike Split

Much like the previous stage, the ride into La Roche-sur-Yon should result in a bunch sprint. Those who missed out in stage 1 will be looking for some redemption. The caveat would be a very early break along with cooperative wind. If a breakaway group can get six minutes clear through the initial climbs and work together, then the peloton will need to up their overall average pulling power by about 10 percent to reel it back in before the finish. The incentive will be there for teams vying for the win, so expect those teams to put in some work to keep gaps manageable.
