Unfortunately, most athletes will never reach their true potential with this approach. Tragically, they will overtrain and injure, and their health will suffer long-term.

I am a physician (MD) and a master of Exercise Science and Coaching (M.Sc.).
Although I should have known better, I was in a similar situation myself. For 5 years, I trained like a maniac to compulsively qualify for the Ironman Hawaii.
I worked more against my body than with myself. In the long term, everything was suffering due to my training regime. I was terrible at academics, had no time for my friends and my girlfriend, and deteriorated my health.
I qualified for Kona, but needed to walk 30k of the marathon in Hawaii instead of flying to age group victory.

However, this need not be.
You Don't have to suffer and train for failure to become successful.
Quite the contrary!

After applying a holistic approach, I finished my MD, studied exercise science and coached many athletes to age group and professional victories. Personally, I became the first amateur in Ironman Hamburg in 8:57, qualified three times for Hawaii, and stayed sub 9h in the 2018 edition.
While working with my athletes holistically, we set world amateur records (8:12 and 8:19h in the Ironman), pro podiums and, more important, changed their lives.
