Cortney discovered triathlon in 2009, when she raced her first sprint distance tri. Although she participated in sports growing up, she was primarily a classical pianist and was never considered to be an athlete.
Inspired by the PNW active lifestyle when she moved to Seattle in 1998, she took up hiking, biking, and running and completed a 50-mile hike on the PCT, and later, the ChelanMan half-iron triathlon. From there, she was hooked on distance racing and although she trains hard and is fiercely competitive, she credits her classical-music-trained brain, not her body, for her athletic accomplishments.
While she loves participating in endurance events, she is a student of the sport, fascinated by physiology and psychology of training. Her coaching approach is goal- and data-driven, and she will push you to push your boundaries because good things come to those who change! Cortney is a USAT Level I certified coach and has a Fitness Nutrition Specialist (FNS) certification from the National Association of Sports Medicine (NASM) to help athletes develop healthy eating and fueling habits. She has an MBA from the University of Washington Foster School and enjoys the business of coaching and promoting a healthy lifestyle.
