I enjoy coaching athletes with medical comorbidities, as well as healthy athletes looking to gain skill/endurance for specific events, or even without an initial event goal. I have coached athletes for road events (criterium, road race, TT, stage race), ultra road events such as HooDoo500, RAW and RAAM- solo and team, & for MTB ultra events, in addition to lifestyle fitness/wellness and fondos. I will work with you on the bike (road/gravel/TT) in addition to crafting goal-focused training plans.
I am a Nurse Practitioner by background, with a graduate degree and deep understanding of human physiology; I spent nearly 25 years working in Cardiology and Critical Care. I have a good grasp of how to make training work with time constraints and with even "serious" medical diagnoses, how to work within HR constraints following a cardiac diagnosis, & how to communicate with physicians to optimize your training without putting you at risk.
I am also a passionate believer in on-the-bike skill work. In my collegiate sport of ice hockey, we dedicated a large volume of practice time to skill-building, but cyclists often operate on the "hop on the bike and ride" philosophy (with the exception of MTB). I enjoy working with individuals and groups on the bike, not only to teach skills, but to role-model the importance of working on skills on your own time, routinely, in order to stay sharp.
Philosophically, what I enjoyed more than anything about my medical career was TEACHING- helping people to understand the WHY is just where it's at for me. If you want to learn more about the training process and really develop a deep understanding of what you're doing, I can help you get there. We can work through training by HR vs power, nutrition and hydration, strength training/stretching/core work to support what you're doing on the bike (I am also a personal trainer), hormonal factors/cycle issues, and I work with an amazing local bike fitter who can help with that critical aspect.
