I’m Ben - sport scientist, ultra-runner, and founder of Grit Metrics.

My mission is simple: to help runners unlock lasting performance and consistency through science-driven training, structured planning, and personalised support. Whether your goal is finishing your first 10K, chasing a half-marathon PR, or preparing for the unique challenge of an ultra, I provide the tools, guidance, and accountability to help you succeed.

My coaching philosophy is rooted in evidence-based practice, tempered by practicality and compassion. Key tenets include:

Data informs, people perform.
Lab metrics (VO₂ max, RMR, thresholds, etc.) are invaluable, but they are tools - not ends. I always aim for the plan to fit you - your schedule, your responses, your personal constraints.

Progressive overload + rest = adaptation.
Pushing your system is necessary, but so is recovery. I monitor load, fatigue, and recovery carefully to avoid burnout and injury.

Sustainability over shine events.
Training is a long game. Even when targeting a specific race, I want the improvements to persist, for you to be stronger, more resilient, less injury-prone, even after the race is over.

Holistic approach.
Running doesn’t happen in a vacuum - nutrition, sleep, mental strength, lifestyle and stress all matter. My role is to help you optimise across the board.

Communication & responsiveness.
I insist on regular feedback and honest conversations. If something is not working, it gets addressed quickly and we adapt.
