I created Winds of Hawi as an alternative to large group triathlon training. I suppose you could say I aim to specialize in the introverted athlete. Being a septuagenarian myself I am especially cognizant of the needs of the senior athlete. I prefer athletes who train on their own, preferably doing swim workouts in open water.
I started riding my bike in the late 90's, first for exercise, then as a serious hobby. This led me to running, specifically the Honolulu Marathon. Did my first in 2012 and have run it almost every year since. I was hanging around triathletes and decided to give it a try. I had no idea how much work swimming would require. Managed to get through my first race in 2014, at the age of 64. From there I moved up to Olympic and Half Ironman distances.
The pandemic shut down one-on-one training and the pools. It was then that I decided to start Winds of Hawi. I did the USA Triathlon Level 1 coach certification on-line. The pools were closed but we could still swim at the beach, so I developed simple training routines that do not rely on a pool, but still based on the principles developed by Terry Laughlin and Total Immersion.
Face-to-face training is back, but I still prefer to interact on-line. However, if you live on Oahu I am available for occasional in-person session.
