You’ve heard it before - the widely accepted belief that one’s peak cycling age is around 28. Though this may be true for some, it’s certainly not true for all of us. Sure, your VO2 max ceiling may peak earlier in life, but there’s so much more to it than that. Life circumstances, psychological maturity, and intrinsic motivation also have to fall into place. For many of us, these things may not come together until later in life. And when they do, it’s absolutely awesome!
That’s certainly how it was for me. Things didn’t finally come together until my 40’s, when I went from an average club rider to a cat 2 road racer, chasing down Aevolo U23 elite guys in regional stage races. That’s not “supposed” to happen with older guys like me who aren’t genetically gifted, but it did.
How’d I do it? Well, curiosity and determination got the best of me, and I got serious about understanding exercise physiology, nutrition, power-based training methodologies, and sports psychology. I implemented everything, and wow did I ever experience results. My takeaway was “this notion that you get slower as you get older is bogus!”
During that time my 16-year career in the tech space hit some roadblocks. Layoffs and a general distaste for the corporate landscape were taking their toll. My life vision seemed incongruent with increasing shareholder value and managing larger teams. Instead, a new vision emerged of helping people get fast on the bike. This new vision seemed so much cooler. So I jumped ship.
I’ve been in business since 2020, with over a dozen happy athletes. Check out my website for testimonials. Though I enjoy coaching athletes of all ages, I excel with those past traditional peak age, who want to see what they can do. I see enormous potential in these athletes, and it gets me super pumped. Maybe this is you?
