I’ve competed in running for 23 years going from local primary school races to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games Marathon.
In my view the coach/athlete relationship is at the heart of any successful performance no matter what level the athlete is competing at whether it be full on coaching or just being the sounding board to make sure everything is going to plan. Over the years my coaches have played a vital role in my development and I most certainly wouldn’t have achieved what I have without them.
It’s my belief that personally tailored training plans to the individual are key to achieving a goal/target. Generic training programs from books, magazines or the Internet are becoming more popular and whilst they cover the bases, they just don’t give the attention to details that runner’s need and deserve.
I’ve coached over 200 athletes through my coaching business – Hawkins Running – achieving pb’s/ in distances from 800m to marathons. I do coaching work with athletics clubs including Airdrie Harriers where I've been Head Endurance Coach since October 2015. These platforms have given me experience in working with athletes with a wide range of ability from a complete novice to a sub 2.30 marathoner.
As an athlete I've been fortunate to represent Great Britain on 6 occasions including the Olympic Games and World Cross Country Championships. I have also won 1 UK Marathon Championship, 16 Scottish titles on road, track & cross country. My personal highlights were finishing 3rd at the 2016 UK Olympic Marathon Trials in a then pb of 2.12.57 (now 2.12.49) gaining me selection to represent Team GB at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
I’m passionate about helping others fulfill their running potential and my experiences I’ve learned as a runner going from complete beginner progressing to the Olympic Games, I feel I can relate to runners of all abilities.
