Running X-Country all through high school, the longest competitive race I ran was 5k and 10k until a friend and I dared each other to both complete the Denver Rock n' Roll Marathon. The only was 4 weeks away. The distance seemed unfathomable, the goal was to never stop running for the entire race. Though friends doubted our 4.5 mile loop from the University of Wyoming Campus to the local WalMart and back really was training we did our best to build our endurance with no real idea of what we were doing. That was now 10 years and numerous events ranging from 5k to 50k running events, sprint to half ironman triathlons, and 100 mile cycling trips. While coaching high school rugby and basketball teams in skill development, and strength and conditioning, I saw first hand the impact that a balance of aerobic endurance and muscular strength can provide an athlete.
