Welcome to Upstream Endurance! I'm a former swim coach who's become an avid cyclist. It's been fun to see how the training principles involved in swimming translate to the bike. After experimenting on myself for a couple years and helping some friends add some structure to their training, I'm excited to be officially offering coaching! I think a lot of cyclists who put many hours a week in on the bike can benefit from structured training. I also still coach swimming, focusing on triathletes.
Upstream Endurance is named for the clarity that can be found as you wade up to the crystal clear headwaters of a stream. I believe that helping athletes gain clarity in their goals, commitments, and training can lead to significant improvements, and being a part of that journey is what makes coaching meaningful for me.
Growing up, my main sport through high school and into college was swimming. My coaching journey began right after college, when I jumped into coaching high school swimming. I was on deck for 10 years, with a majority of that time spent as the head varsity girls coach for the school I teach at. In my tenure, we completely re-wrote the record board, and I was voted Michigan Girls Division 3 High School coach of the year twice. I attribute our success to my passion for continuous growth and improvement: I enjoyed learning about and applying the latest trends in technique and training.
Fast forward to my 30s...I left the pool deck to start a family, taking up cycling in the process. Immediately, I looked for how my exercise physiology knowledge gained from swim coaching could be applied to the bike. After experimenting on myself for a couple years and helping some friends add structure to their own training, I've decided to pursue coaching in a more official capacity. There are many cyclists who spend hundreds of hours on the bike each year and take racing seriously, but could see significant improvements from adding more structure to their training.
