I’m Benny Smith, founder of Sisu Endurance Lab, professional endurance coach, and professional triathlete.
I started running at six years old and eventually turned pro after high school, competing at the highest levels of endurance sport and racing at World Championship events. My athletic career gave me firsthand experience with high performance, structured training, injury, recovery, performance setbacks, and the process of continually adapting as an athlete.
My coaching philosophy is built around three principles:
Individualization
No two athletes are the same. Training should account for an athlete’s physiology, training history, lifestyle, goals, strengths, limitations, and ability to recover. A plan should adapt to the athlete rather than forcing the athlete to adapt to the plan.
Evidence and Experience
Good coaching requires both science and practical experience. I use principles from exercise physiology, performance testing, training theory, and current endurance research while recognizing that athletes are not laboratory subjects. Data helps inform decisions, but coaching requires context.
Long Term Development
Performance is not built from one workout or one training block. The goal is to create athletes who can train consistently, absorb training, stay healthy, and continue improving over time.
I want athletes to understand their training rather than blindly follow it. The best athlete is not necessarily the one who trains the hardest. It is the one who can consistently execute the right training, recover from it, and adapt.
