Acier is a fresh coaching & consulting enterprise, conceived by me, Samuel Thompson, specifically focused on cyclists participating in ultra-distance events.

Acier has been designed to offer an alternative to the ‘traditional’ approach to coaching & training methods, with founding principles of providing a service that is flexible, individual and specific. Acier strives to propose something to athletes in all circumstances, with services tailored to athlete-led demands.

I am an ABCC Level 3 Cycling Coach and experienced long-distance cyclist & racer.

I have 10 years experience of self-supported bicycle touring and participation in Audax UK events and 7 years experience participating in ultra-distance, self-supported cycling events. Notable results include:

2017 - TransAtlantic Way Race - 2,500km - 9th

2018 - Three Peaks Bike Race - 1,600km - 1st

2019 - All Points North - 900km - 5th

2019 - Around Norway - 3,400km - 1st

2019 - Transpyrenees Race No1 - 1,600km - 2nd

2022 – GBDURO22 - 2,000km / 28,600m - 2nd

2022 - Transpyrenees Race No2 - DNF

2023 - MittelgebirgeClassique - 1,060km / 22,740m – 28th

2023 – Pure Peak Grit (FKT) – 600km / 13,500m – 32h:28m:34s

2023 – Transpyrenees Race No3 – 1,800+km / 40,000m – 6th

I have always taken an interest in the training process and understanding how this ultimately influences performance. As I competed more in ultra-distance cycling events, I wanted to take an approach to training that best prepared me for the unique demands of this discipline. I found myself increasingly reading on, researching, and discussing the subject as my interest deepened.

Through these learnings, allied with my personal experience, I have equipped myself with the capacity and confidence to offer the advice and answer those questions. Through Acier I ultimately aspire to help others experience to the fullest what this sport can give.
