Can I loose 5 pounds a month out from my marathon?

Need some advice. I have been training for my marathon on December 3rd. I wasn't careful and have simply eaten two much the last month. I am 5 pounds heavier than I want to be going into the month prior to race. Is it possible to loose 5 in a month without wiping myself out. If so, what is the best way to do it and keep energy level up?

Hello Regina, thank you for your post. As athletes we want to be careful not to try and make up for improper nutrition choices and undo what was done 'overnight.' Take your focus off of your body weight and focus on the numbers that truly matter; and that is body fat and body water%.

When an individual gains or loses weight, it tells us nothing...unless we know exactly what they lost or what they gained, make sense? For example, if an athlete loses 5 pounds in a month, but, they simply got dehydrated and glycogen depleted, performance and recovery will be significantly compromised.

My suggestion is this:
1- get current body composition measurements using a body composition scale
2- simply start eating right (not dieting)

This way, you will not be trying to fit a square through a circle. Only focus your efforts and energy on what you can control (the food choices you make, your training and rest/recovery). Do not focus any energy on the things you cannot control (how fast the body composition changes). By doing so, you will be controlling what you can control and simply letting the body change properly; this way you are not forcing the issue, not dieting and not losing energy for the marathon training.
