Josep was excited to ride on the Powertap and decided that getting the data was more important than riding a disc wheel. He did one loop of the course before the race, to see what it was like, and was riding at 330watts in that warm-up loop! (I was on his wheel being sheltered from the wind and doing 300watts!)

In the TT, notice that Josep only was really over his threshold in the first 1.5 minutes of the TT. After that, he nailed it right at 390-400watts. The course was really tough today, with a very strong headwind on the way out. Notice his watts average for the way out were almost dead on 400 watts. He stomped up the short climb just past the halfway point at 470watts or roughly 120% of his threshold power, which exactly what you might expect, since it was only a minute and half hill. After the hill, the road turns back toward Solvang is slightly downhill and there was a super tailwind. On the way out, his average speed was 24mph, and on the way back it was 33mph, with a maximum speed of 44mph.

His watts on the way out were 398, and then with the tailwind, they averaged 364. In a headwind, again this proves that the race is won during this time, as in the tailwind, there really isn't anything that you can 'push against' in order to produce the higher watts.

One interesting observation with this TT, is that when you look at it with the 4 hard parts highlighted, first off you think they were timed perfectly according to some timing schedule. However, consider what this effort was and how you might apply this to your training. It's a threshold effort with a 1:30 interval at Anaerobic Capacity power every 6 to 8 minutes. So, this is a somewhat modified 'criss-cross' interval in which the athlete holds threshold, goes above it for a short period of time and then comes back to threshold, but not below.

All in all, he did a great ride here, and I predict that his watts were within a good top 10 placing, but since he eschewed the aero gear and does not spend much time on the TT bike (he said this was the first time he has ridden it!) then his time that was about 1:30 off of the Top 10, makes sense for the watts he was producing. Again, showing that it's not only watts that get the best time. You have to be aero and efficient and effective in that aero position.

Look for great things to come from Josep. He's a talent.
