Matt Fitzgerald is a highly respected authority on training for endurance sports. He pioneered a new, cross-training-based approach to training for distance running in his book Runner's World Guide to Cross-Training (Rodale, 2004). His next book, The Cutting-Edge Runner (Rodale, 2005), will show runners how to use the latest science and technology (including GPS devices) to take their running to the next level. Matt is also the author of Triathlete Magazine's Complete Triathlon Book (Warner, 2003) and the forthcoming Performance Nutrition for Runners (Rodale, 2006).
Matt's articles have appeared in such national publications as Fitness Runner, Her Sports, Men's Health, Outside, Runner's World, Running Times, and Triathlete, and on websites such as Active.com and Runner's World Online. In addition, he has edited and contributed to several books including, Nutrient Timing and The Performance Zone.
Matt coaches runners and triathletes online through Training Peaks. Formerly, he coached runners and triathletes online through Carmichael Training Systems. He leads clinics at triathlons and running events in California and also serves as a communications consultant to sports nutrition companies. In the 1990s he was a senior editor with Triathlete, Multisport, and Winning magazines. He is currently an editor at large with Triathlete and moderates the triathlon message board on Active.com.
An All-State runner in high school, Matt is now a top age-group runner and triathlete. He has run four marathons and has personal best times of 15:56 for 5K and 1:13:31 for the half-marathon. In 1998 he finished second in the Duathlon National Championships co-ed relay division. In 2002, he completed his first Ironman triathlon, finishing in the top 2% of the field, and was named a USA Triathlon All-American. He trains 10 to 20 hours per week and lives in Northern California with his wife.
