| Major Scheduled Maintenance & Uprgrade, Saturday 7am-1pm MST
Please note we are performing a major database and site upgrade on Saturday morning.
The site will be unavailable during this time.
The upgrades will consist of a host of enhancements and fixes, most of which are fairly small, but we have made major changes to the database structure. This means that there will be some changes with how web pages, particularly the Daily Log will function.
What we did:
We have consolidated and improved how we store distance data associated with the "actual distance" of a workout. This has led to substantial code updates throughout the site, over 100 different web pages of TrainingPeaks.com have been affected.
What benefit does it have?
The new database structure allows us to more easily store, report and manage the distances recorded during various workouts, and across workout types. It also provides a vastly improved foundation for future site enhancements. See below for a more complete list of updates and fixes.
What will change?
For the most part, not much. Most functions will still be identical, but we'll have a much improved storage system. Specifically, the Daily Log is most affected. There are two primary changes that you will see:
1) One distance per workout
There will be a difference in how "actual distance" is recorded for certain workout types, particularly Brick, Race and Other. Prior to this change, it was possible to store multiple distances per workout, after the change, you will only be able to store a single distance per workout. We are now suggesting that for workouts of type "Brick", that the actual workout should be logged as a separate bike and a separate run. This allows you to better graph and report actual distances per sport type.
2) Uniform Daily Log form fields.
All workouts have the same data fields. Before, we removed things like "power" if you entered a Run workout. Now, you will see the same form for all workouts.
Other notes.
Scheduling workouts using the Workout Calendar will be no different, except you will have better control of exactly what distance you are entering based on teh workout type (miles, km, yards, m.. depending on swim, bike, run etc.)
Key benefits to this upgrade. We now have more granular storage of each distance based on sport, this allows for example, a coach to view data in metric, and the athlete to view data in english. The coach can prescribe a 5k run, the client will see it as a 3.2 mile run. No matter how the client logs the data, the coach will always see metric units and vica versa.
We have also taken the opportunity to make some fixes:
1) Fixed Forerunner 201 views from daily log (your old uploads should work fine).
2) Fixed Suunto uploads to also enter summary data for workout.
3) All uploads now have velocities, elevations, and distances customized based on user settings.
4) Fixed Average Speed and Average Elevation to calculate from Suunto device data.
5) When "Change" workout is selected, previous data is prefilled and not lost.
6) Fixed some polar uploads with empty lines in data.
7) Fixed deletion of Forerunner 201/gpx uploads.
8) Added average speed for Forerunner 201/gpx uploads.
9) Distance added for gpx uploads, fixed parsing of time zones in gpx.
10) Fixed summation of time in zones to eliminate incorrect "60" second durations.
A list of changes:
Overall Site-Wide Changes:
1) Consolidated distances for workouts into 1 field. All old data was merged, the details were added to the comments. NOTE: We suggest that all multi segments workouts be stored as multiple items in the daily log for best reporting.
2) All distances, speeds, and elevations now allow the user to specify units during entry/edit: Workout Calendar, Daily Log.
4) Popups removed for daily metrics, add/edit equipment, and add/edit routes.
Daily Log Changes
1) Reformatted daily log to allow for all data - no longer dependent on workout type.
2) Removed button for "Add a Workout" which was unnecessary.
3) Reformatted View Chart button.
4) Added other weekly distances for other activity types besides swim, bike, run when entered.
5) Improved calorie calcuation and storage
Workout Calendar
1) Added other planned time, planned distance for other activity types besides swim, bike, run when entered.
Training Graphs
1) Are no longer restricted to only 1 planned distance activity type during reporting.
Public View
1) Graphs are now dynamic to show activities types planned/completed during the week, not just swim, bike, run.

| Hi Gear,
Might be a little late here, but i have been asking for over a year for this option on the weekly goals.
Id like to be able to apply the same weekly goal to multiple clients at once, rather than loggin in to each athletes account seperately. So something like, "Complete specified hours of aerobic training this week" to multiple clients at once would be possible.
Thanks
Dave

BOO! I've been using Brick to combine treadmill and spin bike when at the gym. Makes for a much cleaner training calendar. Is there still the limitation on four workouts per day? "Old data will be merged and added to the comments" Am I reading this right? The distance from completed Brick workouts will only be in comments and no longer actually applied to weekly/yearly totals? Going back and screwing with all our historical data is a pisser. Who has the time to retroactively put in new workouts and enter bike and run distances.
So the "new look" will now have data fields like distance and power for strength workouts? This seems like a step in the wrong direction. Customizing the data fields to best represent the activity is what I'd like to see. Strength workouts in particular are very hard to document in TP.
Removed button for "Add a Workout" which was unnecessary.
Unnecessary maybe but a time saver. Not only does it save having to switch to the calendar but it also bypasses all the questions about workout codes when it's not required (i.e. rode to work, an hour on the bike but not a structured workout).
Reformatted View Chart button.
There was an undocumented feature that let you save downloads from more than one device and be able to see for example the graph from my PowerTap (which is notorious for dropping HR) and from my Polar HR monitor. Has this been formalized or will the change prevent this from working as it has.
Will the new database format change the output of the download of all workout history? It would be nice if the Calories Used field was output. It seems to be the one thing that's missing currently. It would also be useful if you could download data for a specific date range so that a previous download could just be updated rather than doing a complete dump each time.

| The Daily Log will show all fields.. for now.. the challenge we face is people are now wanting to estimate things like power outputs for non bike workouts. We have people wanting to record kJ for running. Why not record your pace for swimming? Lots of things like this..
Also, the goal is toward more consistency. Sure, if you do a swim, there is no need to log what bike you rode.. so just ignore it.
The future is user customizable fields based on workout type. But first things first... notice I said USER customizable :-)
Bricks were a tough one. But, what you'll find is that your reports will work the same, and your historical data is the same. You can still record total distance for the overall brick (which is what the current/old system only recognized) and you can comment on the distance of each section. The problem with this has always been that your run and your ride were not counted in "bike" or "run" reports. So, we merged the two distances, then documented the actuals for each. We suggest that you plan a Brick normally, but if you want to be "granular" about it, then you should add a separate run and bike and record your Actuals in each of them. We feel that Brick recording was not "correct" in the past, you couldn't choose which HR zones to use for example. So, our solution was to keep the old way viable, but recommend a new way going forward.
You can still upload two files to a workout.
The undocumented upload thing points to an issue though... if you simply add a bike and run for a BRICK workout and upload your data separately to those workouts, then you really have fine grained, well documented "actuals". What I see is that BRICK will be used in planning, but recording should be for "bike" and "run". So, on a particular Brick day, you would have 3 workouts, the planned "Brick" (so you can see from reports when you did them) and then the resulting bike and run for actuals.
The button removed for "Add a workout" was simply the "GO!" button.. we've always had it automatically submit the page when you picked a sport.. it was just unnecessary.
Yes the exported data fields will change, adding calories to the output, along with time in power zones will occur in a near future enhancement.. good call on the date range choice also, I've noted that. We made tracking calories easier/better too.
Ultimately, what we are doing is laying the ground work for future enhancements and developments to the site. Back in 1999, I made 3 "poor choices" with regard to the design of the database structure (from a techie point of view). I have over the years addressed the first two, now, we have the 3rd one of these.. it was a monstorous undertaking, and, hopefully, users won't really notice how much we changed under the covers. Ever since 1999, we've been building on top of this database and it's just compounded the problems, and made it very hard to actually fix. It's one of those "good problems to have" as we've grown a lot (to give you an idea, we have over 16 million workouts in the database). We finally dug in about 4 months ago, because we knew we had to address it if we were to build new, cool, useful stuff going forward.
I know there will be challenges in the coming weeks, and we are prepared for this. We have a complete copy of all old data at hand that we can perform data-conversions on in real time if you find we didn't get something right. And, it'll take a bit of getting used to, but I don't think too much.
What this will do going forward is allow us to build and enhance the site knowing we have a much better data-architecture under the hood. You can only bolt-on so many turbo chargers, super chargers and NOX kits to a 4-cyclinder engine before you give up and get a V-8. We skipped all that and put a rocket-engine under the hood. Now, hold on for the ride, in the coming months we'll be doing much more fun development. Thanks for your patience through this process.
Feel free to give me a shout anytime to discuss, my direc email is gear at-sign trainingpeaks dot-com, but as I type this at 6am Saturday morning, I am preparing to be in the data center for the next 6 hours, so, maybe we can chat next week :-)
thanks for your support!

| Ron,
This problem is solved by making sure you go to https://www.trainingpeaks.com and login.
When the session uses the secure SSL connection (the "s" in https) it must be to www.trainingpeaks.com not just trainingpeaks.com
Put the "www" in there and you'll be set.

| Hi Gear,
I have noticed since the upgrade that my public view is only in Miles, not KM. Is there a way to switch it back to KM?
Also, If it matters, I noticed that my user was displaying miles when I logged on this morning, even though my preferences were set to KM. I solved this by changing my preferences to miles, saving, and then changing back to km and saving a second time. This put my user back into KM when logged in, but did not fix the public view.
Thanks,
Dave | |

| Thanks for all of your hard work. I particularly like the speed(x10) that now apears on graphs- much more useful. | |

| Could you also place an avg. speed entry to the workout log? I can see an avg. pace which is useful for my runs but not that useful for my bikes. | |

Location: Woodinville, WA | Average Speed is in the "More Date" block. I think what you were asking for is now in the workout info directly across from pace; was that a response to you're request. Anyway, I just noticed that the two values don't always match so there must be a trick to one being calculated and the other one a user editable field. Hopefully it will be sorted out in the promised customized interface for which this upgrade was a prerequiste. I guess for now everything needs to be uniform, er sort of
I did have use today of the unit selection pull down. The cyclocomputer I was using was set in kilometers and it was nice to be able to enter the data and have Training Peaks do the conversion. Not like the HP calculator sitting on my desk isn't up to the job but hey, I'm lazy

Location: Boulder, CO | both the speed and pace in the daily log are calculated by using the total distance and total time. it is non editable. the average speed logged by the devices/manually are/will be different in most cases. those are available on the device pages, and also in more data.
